Treacherously slippy new road surface at bottom of Morrell Avenue

The recently resurfaced section at the bottom of Morrell Avenue is very slippy for cyclists when wet. I was cycling from St Clements towards the Churchill hospital on Thursday last week when my wheels slipped on the road surface and I was thrown into the middle of the carriageway. I sustained severe bruising to my face, needed a 5cm laceration of my eyebrow stitching by the plastic surgeons and fractured my left wrist. I count myself lucky that the car behind me was able to stop in time. I had new tyres on my bike 3 weeks ago. I was aware that the road is slippy when wet as I had skidded several times when descending in the past few weeks, so am cautious about that section of the road. The casualty officer said they had already had 3 previous cases in the preceding few days who had fallen off in the same stretch of road when wet. I presume that there is a fault with the road surface, and I am concerned that there will be a much more serious accident if a surface that is safe for bicycles is not applied very soon.

  • Looking again at where I fell off, the painted yellow lines are so smooth that they reflect the sun, and I agree with the previous comment (4th April) that the newly painted lines are the cause of the problem. They are extremely slippery when wet and constitute a substantial danger to cyclists who could easily be killed if hit by a car. No action has been taken to rectify this despite a number of incidents reported.
