Loose manhole cover in centre of Woodstock Road opposite house number 373a

Reported in the Manhole category anonymously at 10:17, Sunday 28 April 2019

Sent to Oxford City Council 3 minutes later

The Thames Water manhole cover has become loose since the council resurfaced the road. It is in the centre of the road and hence every time vehicles pass over it it makes a load noise which can be heard from houses over 100m away. The constant noise is keeping us and other households awake at night. This has been going on for over 3 weeks and is disrupting our child’s sleep when they are trying to prepare for important exams. It is the council that caused this problem when the road was resurfaced so please don’t pass the buck to Thames Water. Please get this fixed. The loose cover is also a potential risk to cyclists and motor bikes using the road.

Updates

  • Thank you for your report, an inspector has already been out to this location and I can advise this matter has been passed to Thames Water as the manhole belong to them. I have now forwarded this onto the NRSWA Team at Oxfordshire County Council to chase this issue with Thames Water as our request has not been actioned. Oxfordshire County Council are the Highway authority they are therefore able to enforce this we can only request utility companies to fix issues we cannot enforce.

  • Hello, thanks for your response. I spoke to Thames Water again today and they said they had referred the matter back to Oxfordshire highways as it was their contractor that did the work on the road which has caused the manhole cover to become loose. Can you please therefore provide a further update as to what the next steps are to get the necessary repair work done.
