Congestion
Reported in the Roads and Carriageways category anonymously at 12:32, Sun 27 January 2019
Sent to Oxfordshire County Council 3 minutes later. FixMyStreet ref: 1524600.
This junction is poorly designed leading to poor traffic flow.
The bus lane is a complete false economy because the traffic backs up and everyone is held up for 10 - 15 minutes.
The bus lane is short and so busses are held up much further back to make up only a few minutes when they get nearer the lights.
This whole junction would be faster with a proper filter lane.
Traffic turning right in to Bridge St, backs up along Windsor street. This blocks cars leaving George st as it only takes one car wanting to go this way to stop everyone leaving the junction.
Meanwhile the left (ahead) lane on Windsor road is clear but no one can get to it due to the left filter from george st being only for buses.
Furthermore buses can't get to the bus lane because it is short and traffic is backing up all along the road.
If the left filter lane was for all traffic the whole junction would move a lot faster.

I agree with the above but the main problem for me is that when people are approaching the junction from the George Street direction (i.e. left to right on this map), the filter light to turn left is only on the traffic light on the left hand side on the George Street side, and not shown also on the traffic light across the road. This means that the first person in the queue doesn't realise the filter has come on (unless they know the junction well and are actively craning their neck up to the left to look out for it). This in turn leads to delays in cars setting off, but also means that the cars behind use their horns repeatedly (sometimes aggressively) to let people know . I work in the offices just by the junction and this is happening all day long. It's creating unnecessary noise pollution, is extremely annoying and distracting and could so easily be fixed by adding the filter across the road.

I also agree with both statements above. The bus lane would be much better utilised as a left turn for traffic wishing to turn left or to go straight on at the Windsor Street traffic lights. This would then free up the current left turn lane for traffic wishing to turn right onto Bridge Street. This has become such an issue that many cars are now using the bus lane illegally to bypass the congestion. I also work in the offices adjacent to this junction the addition of a left filter light on the traffic lights opposite would be a huge help and reduce the number of times people use their horn due to the car at the front of the queue not having seen the poorly positioned existing filter light.
