Traffic light sequence

Reported via iOS in the Traffic lights category by Andy May at 22:38, Wed 3 October 2018

Sent to Edinburgh City Council 2 minutes later

2 years ago I reported this issue and updated monthly to “Fix my streets” not realising until recently monthly updates were not passed on.

So, I start again.

The lights are on a poor sequence. When traffic is light they change every 8 seconds whether or not vehicles are coming. This invariably stops vehicles unnecessarily.

The main traffic flow is north / south on Gilmerton Road. The lesser traffic flow is east / west (Kingston Avenue / Mount Vernon Road).

Outwith rush-hour traffic I have witnessed hundreds (more likely into thousands after 2 years of this) of vehicles being caused to stop north / south on Gilmerton Road because the sequence has flicked to east / west for no reason as no vehicles were coming.

The traffic lights have sensors on top of them.

The lights used to sit on predominantly north / south green until the sensors detected movement east / west. This was sensible.

Please return them to this setting. Not causing unnecessary breaking, stopping and acceleration away to let fresh air pass through the junction.
