Zebra Crossing a hazard for schoolchildren

Reported in the Roads/highways category by Westfield Parish Council at 14:21, Wed 6 December 2017

Sent to Bath and North East Somerset Council 4 minutes later

A resident of Hazel Terrace has called us to ask if there is anything that can be done about the crossing on the Fosseway, by the entrance to Hazel Terrace and that of First Avenue. It is frequently ignored by vehicles when he is waiting to cross with his son going to school at St Benedicts. There are a lot of children that attend St Benedicts who live in Westfield and have to use this crossing, and a lot of drivers ignore someone waiting. The resident has asked if a pedestrian light controlled crossing could be considered.

  • Good Afternoon,

After looking into your enquiry I would recommend you talking to the police on 101, we deal with the installation of crossings however we have no power in enforcing it.

    Kind regards,

  • Thank you Bethany

Can you pass on the request in the last two lines – “The resident has asked if a pedestrian light controlled crossing could be considered here” – to Highways please? Many thanks Tracey

  • You will need to send the enquiry to us once more as there is no email thread, I will then pass this enquiry to our Traffic and Safety department.

  • Thank you Beth,

I had reported it on Fix my Street, which is why there is no email thread.

Anyway, this is what was written:

I understand the recommendation to refer to the police with regard to the traffic not stopping and I believe the resident has done that as well as calling us. However, the request for Council to consider this as a crossing that should be light controlled is the bit that should be referred to Highways. Many thanks for your help Tracey

  • Thank you for your enquiry and taking the time to contact the Traffic Management Team. There is currently a route review of the A367 being undertaken and the Fosseway is included in this review. The senior engineer has been working with Avon and Somerset Police , during this work, the route, speeds and recorded accident data are looked into and investigated and then recommendations for improvement are made. Any recommendations will be implemented next year as part of the capital program. I regret that at present I am unable to give further details on the scheme at present and is still in progress. However I have spoken with Stefan and it has been confirmed that at present there are no plans to upgrade the existing crossing but we will look into the speeds on this section of network.
