Dangerous pedestrian pavement

Reported in the Pavements/footpaths category anonymously at 12:44, Sun 10 September 2017

Sent to Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council and Hampshire County Council 1 minute later. FixMyStreet ref: 1105326.

The tunnel underneath Chapel Hill bridge is very narrow, only allowing tall vehicles to pass through in one direction at a time by using the middle of the road. As a result, cars may try to mount the pavement if oncoming traffic is not immediately noticed. Therefore, pedestrians on the narrow pavements in the tunnel are at higher risk of being hit by cars. I would suggest that a separate pedestrian tunnel is built, especially as there appears to be an existing additional (currently disused) entrance at the northern end of the tunnel, which would also have the benefit of reducing pedestrian exposure to harmful car fumes. In the short term, a metal barrier could be erected along the road-side of the existing pavements in order to improve pedestrian safety.
