Road breaking up in bus gate outside Cooperative Store
Reported in the Carriageway Defect category by Paul Landon at 21:41, Tue 27 June 2017 using FixMyStreet Pro
Sent to Oxford City Council and Oxfordshire County Council 4 minutes later. FixMyStreet ref: 1061879.
Last year the road surface in the bus gate broke up. It was repaired but broke up again. Earlier this year a strip of tarmac was removed and relaid. This strip, about 6 - 8' long and 4 - 6' wide is continually driven over by buses. This has caused two deep grooves in the road surface and tarmac has been forced upwards into the gap in between causing a dangerous ridge which is nearly 1' higher than the road surface. The bus gate is now impossible to negotiate on a bicycle. The ridge in the centre is growing taller daily as the ruts deepen and it will soon be rubbing against the underside of vehicles passing through the bus gate.

This issue is getting worse - now there is tarmac loose on the road and is spreading across the whole lane.

This problem was notified as being 'fixed' on 11th July 2017. I went past on 21st July and noted that a long stretch of the tarmac had been replaced. Today (25th July 2017) I went past and can see that the same problem has occurred. There are two deep grooves developing in the newly laid tarmac and a ridge is forming. The situation is almost as bad as when I reported it in June. The bus gate is so narrow that all of the heavy busses wheels follow the same line thus putting excessive weight on a very narrow part of the carriageway. When the weather is warm the tarmac moves slightly and the successive busses force it up between their wheels like toothpaste being forced out of a tube. This results in two deep grooves caused by wheel ruts and a mound, or ridge, of tarmac which scrapes the undersides of vehicles.

The problem is getting worse. I passed the area on Sunday 13th August and the road surface has rippled and completely broken up where it was previously 'fixed'.

The raised tarmac ridge in the middle of the bus gate is growing taller every day and the ruts caused by bus wheels are getting deeper. The undersides of vehicles are now rubbing on the top of the tarmac ridge as they pass over it.

I passed this location last night (13th Sept 2017). The whole length of the recently repaired area of tarmac in the bus gate has started to break up. There are lumps of gravel/tarmac spreading across the bus gate. This will present a danger to any cyclists as the bus gate is now uneven and difficult to cycle through this forcing cyclists out into the main carriageway.
