Elderly people and children walking in the road on a blind bend due to overhanging hedges. The laurel hedges which extends for some distance each side of the entrance to Velindre Hospital on Velindre Road continue to cause safety issues for pavement users as they are never cut back sufficiently.

The hedges encroach over the pavement more and more each year. This is a dangerous location, especially on the narrow pavement on a bend with a roundabout and obscured vision for cars due to a house which protrudes into the road. From a distance the hedges look acceptable. However, if you try to walk along this stretch of pavement, even brushing a shoulder against the hedge, it is apparent that they prevent the use of a considerable width of the pavement. Therefore, people on foot are forced to walk in the road to pass one another. People using this pavement include elderly people from the Glendower Court retirement flats a short distance away, some of whom use walking sticks and zimmer frames; mothers with pushchairs and toddlers walking alongside who commute on foot to playgroups, nurseries and schools; school children; people walking dogs and those carrying shopping back from the village. I have previously spoken to the contractors who cut the hedge, including the person in charge, but they seem disinterested in cutting it back to the wall boundary (or better still within the short wall boundary to allow for both hedge growth and human shoulder width). Due to the aforementioned house and roundabout it is not possible to safely walk on the opposite side of the road. This hedge is becoming more of a safety hazard each year for people having to walk in the road, especially at night. This hedge needs to be cut back within its boundary during the spring cut, for public safety.
