Unlit roadworks danger to cyclists

Reported by Cllr Dick Wolff at 22:16, Sat 2 October 2021

The remodelling of the highway to create cycle lanes at Botley is proceeding at a glacial pace. It must have been going on along this stretch of road for six months. Various 'cyclists dismount' signs have appeared from time to time - some for no apparent reason (e.g. eastbound at the entrance to the A34 flyover). This usually is a cheap substitute for providing safe temporary cycling infrastructure during roadworks. Barriers have been put up which unnecessarily prevent westbound cyclists using the safe former (albeit unmarked) route along the wide pavement outside Macdonalds, and then the cyclist is forced to merge with traffic through the chicane at the roadworks at the N Hinksey Lane junction. At night this is unlit and unsafe for cyclists as motorists often try to squeeze past. Rather than profoundly unhelpful 'dismount' signs can we have prominent signs warning motorists not to attempt to overtake cyclists along here, and sufficient illumination?
