Flooding of Church Lane Birdham

Reported anonymously at 10:52, Tue 19 January 2010
Sent to West Sussex County Council and Chichester District Council 2 minutes later

With heavy rain the culvert on the south side of Church Lane, which runs under ground behind the properties of Cherry Lane, gets full and floods the road in the region of Church Lane and Sprigfield Close. This culvert needs to be cleaned out to permit water to flow unhindered from Church Lane to the south.

Site inspection 21.01.10 This is a private drainage issue-not highway drainage. It may be beneficial to contact Chichester District Council who are the Land Drainage Authority and can serve notice on landowners.

I have had an update email from Chichester Council dated 22 Jan. "Do you have any idea who owns the culvert that is causing Church Lane to flood? I am aware of the culvert that is causing problems - made all the more difficult by it's length, which is going to make the cleaning of it very difficult! Chichester District Council is not responsible for maintaining this watercourse. I am currently trying to identify ownership of the culvert, so that the District Council can write to the landowners to request that it is inspected and cleared. It's probably going to be a joint responsibility by the owner of the overgrown field adjacent to the culvert and all the residents that back onto the culvert from both Cherry Lane and Walwyn Close - but I need to confirm this via a land registry search - unless you have any further details?

I will keep you updated on any progress.

Kind Regards, Gavin

I have had communication from the Chi council that they are investigating who are the owners of the adjacent land that the culvert flows through
