Grit Bin for Broad Gates Estate

I wish to add my weight to the case for a grit bin on Broad Gates and the nearby streets. Our nearest grit bin is quite a few streets away, and does not hold enough grit to cover a small road (let alone a whole estate, causeways and drives). We are at the top of a hill, many of us have sloping driveways and access becomes practically impossible when the icey weather comes. We are not asking for a huge bin, just one that is more conveniently situated for us forgotten folk at the top of the estate. Thank you.

I've had an email back - thought it may be useful to add it for everyone's info who are submitting similar requests.(Glad we are all of same opinion!)

Copy of email: Highways and Engineering currently provide and maintain grit bins at 510 locations on the public highway throughout the Barnsley area. We also hold a database that contains all requests for grit bins, to which I have now added this request. The Council are not able to provide additional grit bins for the current winter season.

All grit bin locations are currently being assessed and all requests for new locations are being assessed once this has been done the new lists will be provided for next years winter service

From now until the end of May 2010 a Highways Officer will visit each site to assess each new request using a standard form, which includes a "scoring" system and allows us to prioritise the most deserving locations. This system takes into account if the street is part of a regular gritting route, the steepness of the road, unusual road levels, the proximity of elderly persons or other sensitive facilities such as health centres, schools etc. The allocation of a bin to the assessed sites then relies on the points scored.

I would add that this request will stay on our database and will automatically be reconsidered in future years.

Thanks,
