Noise disturbance from loose mains cover on Dalston Lane!

Reported in the Roads/highways category anonymously at 17:59, Mon 28 December 2009
Sent to Hackney Borough Council less than a minute later

A loose water mains cover on Dalston Lane (at top of Greenwood Rd) that makes a v loud and disturbing noise when driven over by every vehicle on that side of road. Previously reported in Summer, (fixed), then reported at beginning of December and still not fixed. It is very disturbing and makes it difficult to sleep. Please could this be permanently fixed urgently. Disappointed that no response since reported at beginning of December. Thank you.

Disturbing though the noise is (I've had one near me), the manhole might be dealt with more urgently if the problem is considered (by the powers that be) to be one of safety. And, of course, a loose manhole cover can be extremely unsafe. However, I suspect Hackney Council will do nothing except - maybe/perhaps - pass this problem onto Thames Water, who are ultimately responsible for fixing it. I respectfully suggest you contact Thames Water directly and point out this is a safety issue.

Thank you for the advice. You are right - we will try and contact Thames Water as well, pointing out the safety issues to cyclists; although I hold out little hope ...

Contacted Thames Water on 04 January - follow up time is supposed to be 20 days - not quite up - but no sign of being fixed. Hackney Council have just contacted me and advised that they have marked the offending cover with paint and asked Thames Water to fix (And promised to keep on at them!), so I am more hopeful this will be resolved soon.

100% not fixed by the sounds of it, who can I call to moan?

Hi there, you can call Thames Water directly on 08459200800 plus various extensions and wait a while for an answer. You could also contact Hackney Council. I have now been in contact with TW, 28 January, 1st March, 16 March. To be clear, it is a 25cm square inspection cover that is making the noise (not a manhole cover - ie. fresh not foul water - different departments, which throws them) - and there is a 'valve box replacement' that needs to take place apparently. There is significant record on the problem and they have promised to prioritise scheduling every time I speak to them... On the 16 March, it finally went to their 'escalation team' and they are promising me that someone is going out on 17 March (tomorrow) to inspect the problem. Another phone call from someone else who is fed up of the long-term noise disturbance would be great. I find being very polite works well, but don't let them fob you off, you need to spell out the history of the problem and force them to call you back (ie. their escalation department).
