Cyclists trapped on inside of bend

Reported in the Roads/highways category by Ian Burrows at 12:49, Sat 18 July 2009
Sent to City of London Corporation less than a minute later

When going down Snow Hill to turn left onto Farringdon Road southbound, the profile of the corner is wrong and causes all vehicle traffic to cut in right against the kerb which is going to squash a cyclist any day now, I've seen a few near misses in the last few weeks alone. The pavement is really wide so could easily be cut back to make more space for cyclists/cycle lane and re-profile the corner.

Generally, we should be increasing footpath space these days. Perhaps in this case other areas of pavement could be extended to shield the cycle lane?

Actually as a regular driver of this route I can confirm that the corner did indeed used to be wider and was narrowed a couple of years ago after some road works. I have no idea why it was changed. It makes it much harder for me to give enough room for cyclists turning, particularly when they pass on the inside. As for the commenter suggesting that footpath space ought to be increased, they cannot have seen the location or they would realise that there is enough room for cattle to roam without disturbing anyone!
