University Parking

Reported in the Car parking category by Gordon Everard at 08:47, Wed 13 May 2009
Sent to Cornwall Council 3 minutes later

The roads around Trevance/Green Lane are becoming congested (and dangerous) caused by inappropriate and selfish (possibly illegal) parking by university students (or staff). I appreciate that parking AT the university is a problem but with the roads around this area being particularly narrow are causing a significant hazard. It is also unfair to local residents and their visitors.

The addtion of yellow lines in various areas may go some way to easing the problem although I think the parking (by students) on roads where there are no lines will continue if not get worse. The University are currently on holiday so there is very little problem AT THE MOMENT.

Since the University is still on their Summer recess it cannot be[ determined what effect the new parking restrictions (ie., yellow lines) will have. I still believe as do other residents, that the areas where no lines exist will continue to be an overspill car park for students.

As I stated in my last message, we will await the return of the the University students before seeing if the new measures have improved the situation although it must be stated that a number of residents are considering trying to move from the area despite the new measures (considering that the measures will have little effect).

So far there is a noticable improvement and I believe the University has now opened following the Summer recess. To date, there have been no problems! However, time will tell if there has been a 'permanent' improvement.

Although there was some improvement initially we are still being subjected to the roads being used as an overspill University car park. I believe that the situation will again deteriorate until CUC uses common sense and provides adequate parking facilities (at no or very low cost, not the stupid charges they currently make). We are now being faced with the nearby building of some 200+ flats for students with only NINE parking spaces thanks to total lack of planning foresight by Cornwall CC, totally ignoring the residents wishes and those of Penryn Council- our LOCAL representatives!!

As expected, the problem is returning and, I'm told, will get 'much worse after Xmas' (?). The recent double yellow lines are being ignored to a certain extent and the area does not appear to be monitored. The CUC policy of trying to get the students to 'car share' is a non-starter. As one student said, "Why should we"!!

University currently on holiday for Xmas, therefore NO Problem at the moment.

See my note of 28 which still applies although the police have been around booking those parked on double yellow lines. So those caught now move into area where there are no yellow lines. WOnderful!!
