I am writing to see whether there is anything you can do to help me regarding a derelict property in my street. It is number 2-4 Sutherland Terrace. I have been complaining to environmental health since I came to live there 5 years ago, but to no avail. The property has been empty for this amount of time at least. Every time I've complained they say that someone owns the property and they will issue an order on them to come and clean it up, board windows etc. The problem is windows being broken on the house, vandalism, graffiti with expletives on the front door. Constant dumping of rubbish at the property, vermin, people urinating etc in the garden and down the cellar. I understand there is an empty properties team at Leeds City Council but this property has never been fast tracked to them...as yet. How long will it take before something is done? The environmental health apparently can't answer this. We are paying our council tax every year but for what? Visitors who come to my house see the state of the property and quite frankly it's embarrassing as I'm sure you can imagine! I am sick and tired of complaining about this and I know other people have also complained about this matter. There is a cafe opposite the property and a take away at the rear, it is hardly health and safety compliant when vermin are around. The owner should be made to do something with the property as if we did not pay our council tax something would be done with us good law abiding citizens who try to keep their properties respectable. Whilst I am writing to you I would just also like to state that one two occasions in the last 3 months the bin men have not turned up on designated days to collect our recycling. The second time was last Friday (good Friday) when everyone had their bins out but no one turned up. Apparently they were working that day but again no answer as to why they didn't arrive. When I rang up I was told the Council would send me some green bin liners to fill until they are due again on 8th May!! So what are the rest of the street meant to do with their recycling? Or should we just all not bother? I look forward to hearing from you and hope you can in fact help to do something regarding these matters, particularly the vacant house.
