Grit Box

Sent to Birmingham City Council 3 minutes later

The road is not gritted in winter and the road is very steep. When it snows - no cars can move up the road causing either collisions or abondoned vehicles in inappropriate locations where they have gievn up. I feel a grit box or 2 around sedgebourne way would help this.

Can you remind me next November, I will request 2 bins.

We could do with a grit box for Larch Drive also. Last winter we had to leave our cars on Hollymoor Way as we could not get into Larch Drive.

there is no need for a grit box here as it will cause more problems from the local youths and is very unsightly. i have asked my neighbours also and they agree that they do not want this.

Well my neighbors and I think there is a need. There are hundreds of Grit boxes around and cant just be removed because of youth. I have requested a grit box because when it snows people don't know when to give up and accidents start to happen. Using the 'youth' is a terrible excuse not to have one. As for unsightly, we couldn't care if it is - if it means we can get our vehicles onto drives safely, then that's what matters.

If we cannot have a grit box then can we be added to the route for the gritters? Otherwise what council address should we use to send claims to for any damage caused to our vehicles this winter?

Posted by Richard at 11:59, Mon 9 November 2009

Mr. Guy, I think that is a great alternative and should in actual fact be the first choice, grit box second!

Posted by Cllr Keith Barton at 15:33, Mon 9 November 2009

I have asked the engineers to make a visit and assess for suitability. Roads are gritted according to priority, bus routes, schools, hospitals etc. The estate would not meet that priority and will not therefore be gritted. It will take a couple of days for it to be checked out and I will let you know the outcome.

I think that the option for griting the roads will work best. The idea of putting a gritbox in my street simply outrages me. Its bad enough when people have had there sky dish's placed on the front of there house, it is not very aestheticly pleasing.

My only concern with the gritters is that they can sometimes cause damage to vehicles parked near to the road. If it were possible to be made aware of their arrival, then this would be the best option.

As I explained, gritting is not an option. The siting of a grit bin is a matter of safety, not aesthetics and the decision will be made on the basis of whether or not the site meets the criteria.

I must urge you then not to put a grit box on this road. We have no need for it. Yes there is an incline but nothing deserving of griting.

I would urge you to save the grit for a place that needs it I.e. the motorway, last year this city practicaly came to a stand still due to through roads not being gritted and motorways going to 1 lane.

To sum up, we have no need for a gritbox, we dont want a gritbox, there are roads that have a greater need for a gritbox.

Are you aware it goes all the way round in a horse shoe?

There is much more than a small slope, it does stop cars from getting up it. Ive had it happen every year along with other people who live on the road, or a road off this.

I have requested this for Safety. The reason the motorways came to a stand still was because the snow was too heavy and settling on top of grit. I am happy for the council to evaluate the situation, and if they deem it unworthy for a grit box, then i will be grateful they have at least considered it. They are the experts in this, so i will leave it in their hands.

I've made a request in which several people have agreed with who can see the logic in having one. I agree they are not a great sight, but this is no reason not to have one. That's all i have to say on the matter, and do not wish to turn this into a further debate.

The motorways come under the remit of the Highways Agency and are nothing to do with the Council. The only consideration is that of safety. The criteria is laid down nationally and the decision to install a grit bin is based solely on that criteria.

Last year there were several accidents on Hollymoor Way as a direct result of icy road conditions. I even watched an articulated lorry slide down the hill with all 9 axles locked up. So I would say the road definitely needs gritting, but also a lot of the side roads off Hollymoor Way are relatively steep (eg Larch Drive) and I think we would like a grit box if possible. I know I slid down the slope straight onto Hollymoor way last year and fortunately nothing was coming along the road.

The Enginer has now informed me that the Birch Ave/Sedgebourne Way junction does not meet the criteria for a grit box. Sedgebourne Way between Larch and Ash does meet the criteria and a grit box will be installed. I hope everyone can accept this.

Yet another winter and yet again struggling to get cars into Larch Drive.
