Insufficient street lighting

Reported in the Street lighting category anonymously at 15:00, Wed 21 January 2009
Sent to Surrey County Council 4 minutes later

As a pedestrian walking around the corner from Morton Rd to Meadway drive the lighting is completely insuficient such that one cannot see kerb or hedge. This is partly due to the street light at the corner of Moton/Meadway/Ridgeway being partly obscured by a tree & partly due to the next streetlight on Meadway being not only too far away but also completely obscured by a tree

Unfortunately the response from SCC below is rather unimaginative :- "I appreciate your concern regarding lighting at this junction, but I regret that I find myself unable to request that any pruning take place.

Morton Road: So much pruning would need to be undertaken that it is unreasonable to ask the owner of the conifer trees (at 83 Meadway Drive). Action has been taken previously by the owner to lift trees from the footway and also to clear the immediate area around the lamp column & bus stop opposite the School access. As such, I am satisfied that the owner has met his/her obligations under the Highways Act.

Ridgeway: The entire lower limb would have to be removed from the tree in the grounds of 'Needwood' that it may unbalance the tree. I feel that the tree limb was in place before the lamp column was erected, so this situation has existed for over 30 years.

The only viable solution would be to replace the lamp columns at the junction to better locations; to avoid tree growth. The County is currently procuring a Lighting PFI which will see all lamp columns over 10 years old replaced within the first 5 - 7 years of the contract as part of the Core Investment Programme (CIP). Should the PFI proceed, it is anticipated to commence in October 2009. In reality and with regret, I cannot offer a solution to the lighting at this junction until the CIP is in the Horsell area. "
