Why has tree been 'pruned?'

Why has the large beech tree adjacent to The True Briton car park been pruned leaving only main branches? It was pruned on the morning of Saturday 4th Oct. 2008. Was it diseased? Was it casting a shadow over the pub car park? I've been trying to get the large beech tree outside 242 & 244 Stainbeck Road, pruned for some time. It was mentioned on a previous email re a faulty street light nestled in this tree, that a job would be raised to prune the branches.

The 'tree' in question. There is less shade on the car park / pub terrace! Was this the reasoning behind the 'surgery?'
Apparently the tree had a fungal infection that might have rendered it unsafe! I'm not totally convinced that this was the reason. << Watch this space >>
I'm not convinced it was a fungal infection. I might make a request to Leeds City Council under the Freedom of Information.
Still contemplating making an FoI request. << Watch this space >>
I need to put in the FoI request as I'm not totally convinced by the reason given by LCC for the trees removal. << Watch this space >>
Still considering an FoI request to LCC for the facts relating to this tree.
