Sent to Copeland Borough Council 5 weeks, 1 day, 23 hours, 21 minutes later
I am a wheelchair user and on Monday, May 19th I had the misfortune to be locked in the toliet for the disabled. I had used my Radar key to open the door, which is a heavily reinforced one, presumably to deter vandals. As the door shut behind me I was left in total darkness and had to feel my way to the toilet, although I could have found it by smell alone! I could not see if there was a toilet roll or whether there were any hand washing facilities. I found it impossible to open the door to get out and had to pass my daughter the key under a gap at the base of the door. I dread to think what would have happened if I had been alone.
I went to the Copeland Borough council offices on May 21st and reported the matter to Ms KI Copeland who assured that the matter would be dealt with promptly.
Unfortunately I had to use the toilet on Friday, May 30th and nothing had been done to rectify the problem. I was already prepared so was able to cope but I think it is absolutely disgraseful that the situation arose in the first place and even worse that nothing had been done two weeks later. I only used the facilities with great reluctance once I encountered the apalling aroma as this did not bode well for the cleanliness of the facility, perhaps it was as well that I could not see what I was using!

I had to do an awful lot of pushing to get anyone to do anything. One man insisted that the toilets were inspected daily and I said it was patently obvious from the smell and the absence of a light, that they weren't. He also said that it was the responsibility of Egremont town council and not Copeland Borough council so it was out of his durisdiction and I should contact them. I informed him that a word from him would carry more clout than a word from me and would he get back to me to let me know what was or was not happening. He rang on another occasion and said a light bulb had been ordered! Surely the council have a stock of light bulbs? An extractor fan had also been ordered and would be fitted as soon as it arrived, hopefully this would address the issue of the smell. I said regular, thorough cleaning would cure that.
I haven't been to Egremont recently so I do not know what progress, if any has been made, particularly regarding the door.
