Foul Smells

Reported by John Gore at 22:16, Sun 24 February 2008
Sent to Chorley Borough Council and Lancashire County Council 3 minutes later

Our house is becoming uninhabitable due to effluent and production smells from Plocks Farm pet food factory opposite. We know they are under control of the a PPC licence via the Environment Agency but they can't do anything. We have contacted EH at Chorley Council but they just refer us to the EA. Please help!!! We can't open windows, have to dry all washing in a tumble dryer, can't use the garden and can't use the extractor hood over the cooker because the smells from outside get sucked into the house due to the negative pressure. We've even contacted the Lancs Evening Post who ran a story but the stink continues.

Although the local council contacted us, they cannot do anything because the Factory across the road is under control of the Environment Agency. The Environment Agency will not do anything urgently stating "They will work with the factory to reduce odours"). Things are worse than ever!!!

this plant has been on operation producing this product for over 30years. perhaps the objector / owner of the property concerned should have been aware that smell was a by-product of the food industry. furthermore a bit of investigation prior to buying could have highlighted that living in a ruaral area does have its percived downside by some. i would have thought the 25,000 cars per day - lancs highways map - would be more of a noise / smell problem. for most a chocolate box rural scene is a dream, the reality is much worse.

Just to add the plant is a major employer in the area and exports worldwide including the USA. Europe legislation prevents the use of GM products in animal feed, so as the EU is GM free this plant exports GM free product to the USA. In addition the road between the objectors property and the plant is the A59, which Lancashire CC state that approx 25,000. However the site owners wish to relocate some outlying warehouses on to the site thus cutting 10,000 wagon movements per year on the area, the downside is that extra building work will be needed on this site, which may the reason for the objection!!!
