Nuisance dog - noise and attacks

Reported anonymously at 16:45, Mon 26 July 2010
Sent to Vale of White Horse District Council and Oxfordshire County Council 5 minutes later

Number 22 Highclere Gardens (incorrectly marked as Highcliffe on this map) have a small white "scotty" type dog called Marmite, which they periodically allow to roam around outside their house.

Despite being tiny, it attacks passers-by using the footpath joining Highclere Gdns to the Denchworth Road.

Yesterday it actually bit me on the ankle. I know of at least one other person in this road who has now been nipped by this nasty little dog.

Can the owners please be told by someone with authority that this behaviour is not acceptable.

On a lesser level, it is also not acceptable for them to leave this dog penned in their side-way, whining, barking and growling at passers-by using the footpath. This occurs every evening, also very early in the mornings: I have not been past in the middle of the night to check if they leave it out all night.

I have been contacted by Mr Marshall, the Environmental Officer for the area, who deals with dog problems. He pointed out that dog attacks are a matter for the police, but has kindly offered to write a warning letter to the owners, outlining their responsibilities.

Assuming that Mr Marshall did write the letter, it seems to have had an effect, in that the dog has not been seen or heard of for the last two weeks. It has certainly not been roaming around loose, neither has it been seen penned in the side way. It is possible that they are only away on holiday, but fingers crossed, they have either undertaken training for the dog, or passed it on to someone who cares enough to train it properly.

Having seen the dog roaming loose again early one morning, I contacted Mr Marshall again, and he went round to speak to the owners. He later reported back to me that they weren't in, but the dog was, along with another one, and they were both "going crazy in the front room". His words. He said that he would keep trying until he caught the owners in.

No further attacks from the little dog, but it's still barking a lot. No update from Mr Marshall, so I don't know if he caught the owners in.

Mr Marshall tells me he called at the house several times but was unable to make contact with the owners. He therefore passed it over to the community Police Officer, who would be able to call during the evening.

The dog has not been seen roaming loose recently, so I can only hope that the owners have finally taken note.

I think it is best to close this entry, but would encourage all other readers to report up any dog-related problems.
