Excessive noise and anti-social behaviour

Reported anonymously at 20:10, Sun 27 June 2010
Sent to Lambeth Borough Council 4 minutes later

The Gladstone pub plays very loud karaoke music until 0200 every Saturday night and sometimes other nights too. In addition, they empty bins of bottles over the first floor to the bins on the ground floor causing extremely loud glass smashing up to 0230 in the morning. And there is always a group of drunken people outside the pub, drinking in the public area, swearing, shouting, singing and behaving antisocially up to 0300 every Saturday and many other nights too. It is now Sunday evening at 8.00pm and they are just getting underway for another night of drunken loud mayhem. I have reported this twice to the noise patrol, but the problem persists.

The noise department eventually responded when my local Councillor became involved, and with his help we are pressing for action. Karaoke has been reduced a bit, but the public drinking, drunkeness and antisocial behaviour from the pub's customers outside the pub till the early hours of the morning persists as bad as ever. Coincidentally it is 8.30pm on Sunday when this update request was sent through to me, and the pub and its crowd of regular screaming, shouting drunken patrons are already quite warmed up for another night of mayhem.

This problem still continues (as of 1 August). Drinking outside and shouting/aggressive behaviour until 0300 and loud music at least until 0100 from the Gladstone pub. I have reported the antisocial behaviour to the police by phone and reported the matter once again by email to my Councillor and to senior officials at Lambeth Council with whom I have been in touch previously. I now await action. Lambeth Life newspaper dated 1 August speaks of zero tolerance for this sort of problem. Let's see if the Council live up to this claim.

After several enquiries with the Councillor, the Council and others the pub fell silent and has remained so. Peace at last! The drunken crowds have gone, the street is more attractive without their influence, their rubbish and their noise. News on the street is that the pub is to be permanently closed and converted into housing. I have not seen any planning permission, but in principle this is a very good outcome.
