Traffic hazard

Sent to Gateshead Borough Council 3 minutes later

On the B6317 approaching the roundabout outside the Sands Industrial Estate from the S.W., passing the JET garage a sign shows my route to the Metro Centre is straight ahead so I stay in the nearside lane. If I stop at the roundabout, traffic draws up on my right as if to go right to Swalwell but in fact many of the drivers are going straight ahead and as a result when leaving the roundabout to go to the Metro Centre, cut across me as they exit into the one-lane exit road. In my view it is an "accident waiting to happen" spot and has been for a number of years.

On the approach road to the roundabout the outside lane should have "Right turn only" arrows on the road surface so that traffic going straight ahead will stay in the nearside lane.

According to the sign for this roundabout, straight ahead i.e. the major road is in fact the slip road for the A1 - South.

The left-hand lane is for Sands Ind. est. and A1 traffic.

Therefore any vehicle wanting to go to the Metro Centre should be in the right-hand lane.

The "accident waiting to happen" is simply because many motorists do not understand roadsigns - the Original Poster being a case in point!

It is interesting to note - but not surprisingly - that our wonderful Gateshead Council has failed to comment!
