Another travellers camp on Jays Close

Sent to Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council and Hampshire County Council 1 minute later

Another group of travellers have set up camp on Jays Close - on the grass verge between De La Rue and Sony, opposite the Highways Agency. They must have arrived at some point in the past week. Today when I cycled past, I saw two caravans, a 4x4, and a flat-bed lorry parked on the verge.

Thank you for your email dated 9 March regarding travellers.

The council must follow a specific procedure when dealing with unauthorised encampments:

The process starts with confirming whether or not the council owns the land and if it doesn't who does, once land ownership is confirmed, welfare checks are carried out, to identify if there are any welfare needs amongst individuals and if there are no welfare needs the council can serve a direction to leave.

If after the direction to leave is served and the individuals continue to remain on the land past the date given, the council will apply to the magistrates court for a possession order.

It usually takes between 10 and 14 working days to complete the eviction process. This will depend on the circumstances of each individual case and the time taken to obtain a court hearing.

If the travellers are committing a crime you should contact the police on: SNEN (Single Non Emergency Number) 101 or Police Control Centre 0845 045 4545

If I can be of any further assistance, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Kind regards
